10 Years, 10,000kms, $2.8 million and 4 Homes for Country Cancer Patients

Mercer SuperCycle ride

This year 34 cyclists completed a 1,000km journey through rural South Australia, a bittersweet moment as they celebrated their 10th, but also final, Mercer SuperCycle raising funds for country cancer patients travelling to Adelaide for treatment.

Over 10 years, Mercer SuperCycle has raised an incredible $2.8 million which has provided four family-style homes through The Hospital Research Foundation (THRF) Group’s Under Our Roof project!

Under Our Roof provides a home away from home for country and interstate cancer patients to stay with their families while going through treatment. Thanks to cyclers’ fundraising efforts over this time, there are two homes in Woodville West and two new family-style apartments at Bowden’s 354 On The Park East.

Since the establishment of the first two homes in 2016 until now, 74 patients and their families have stayed in the homes, providing comfort at a time needed most, travelling from regional South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and the Northern Territory.

Chair of Mercer SuperCycle Jim Jeffery is extremely proud of the efforts over the past 10 years and the impact the homes will continue having on people.

“I’ve felt incredibly privileged each year to have participated in Mercer SuperCycle. I couldn’t be prouder of all the efforts from the 200+ riders and 70+ support crew over the past 10 years,” Jim said.

“Everyone who uses the homes deserve the comfort they provide and I’m grateful to have helped deliver this. I hope cancer patients and their families enjoy a place of solace despite the unfortunate circumstances dealing with cancer.”

Paul Flynn, Chief Executive of The Hospital Research Foundation Group said the homes help ease the burden for cancer patients and provide stability for families during difficult times.

“Thanks to the dedication from the Mercer SuperCycle riders and support crew over the past 10 years, we are extremely proud to have provided four homes for cancer patients and their families which are all close to local hospitals and transport,” Paul said.

“Patients and their families are hugely grateful whenever they stay in our homes for the large spaces and sense of comfort, which really gives them the support they need to heal and manage their cancer treatment.”
