A record-breaking night of fundraising for breast cancer

Once again, our superstar supporters Adelady and G-Fresh smashed their fundraising goal and raised an incredible $126,800 for breast cancer research!

It was a sellout crowd of 475 people at their Longest Table event at Adelaide’s Sunnybrae Estate. Delicious food was enjoyed, as well as dancing and bidding on an array of prizes generously donated by many South Australian businesses.

The money raised will go towards the upgrade of a vital piece of equipment at the Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research, which helps enhance the accuracy of breast cancer cell analysis.

Breast cancers are 3D masses that grow in a much softer environment of the human body. However, the current equipment analyses human cancer cells on hard lab plasticware with a 2D surface, which isn’t the true environment cancer cells grow in.

The Ziess LSM900 Confocal Microscope with Airyscan will now allow the group to accurately analyse breast cancer specimens in their normal 3D state, using a sophisticated system that shines laser light into the 3D tumour mass.

It will produce a precise picture of the cancer cells so researchers can analyse their behaviour more accurately, and deliver results based on the true behaviour of cancer cells.

“We are absolutely over the moon and our hearts are smiling that the money that our Adelady community raised for The Hospital Research Foundation Group is going to buy an extremely important Confocal Microscope, to be used by breast cancer research teams at the Basil Hetzel Institute,” Lauren and Hayley said.

“Being able to physically see where our funds go and how they will help women here in SA is the best part!”

Thanks to Adelady and G-Fresh’s tireless fundraising efforts, this equipment update will be a game-changer in how the team conduct their research!
